19:07:51 From Michele Ritala - King County to Everyone: So, can you lead a backpack in Canada and have it NOT be a Global adventure if people don't have to pay in advance? 19:08:54 From Cheryl Talbert to Everyone: It doesn't have to be a Global Adventure if it is in North America and everyone pays all their expenses to all vendors themselves. 19:09:07 From Michele Ritala - King County to Everyone: Great, thanks 19:09:34 From Cheryl Talbert to Everyone: If you charge more than a nominal member fee then it has to be managed as a Global Adventure. 19:38:28 From Bronsa Swint to Everyone: how do you decide how many participants? CHERYL: Varies with the constraints and logistics of each trip. Some adventures may be limited by the max number of people that can fit into camps or lodgings or other core activities. If those limitations don't exist, you can generally support more people if you have a co-leader or have guides to help you. The key is that you don't take any more people than you can support while delivering the high quality activity you promised. 19:54:55 From Bronsa Swint to Everyone: what does trek vs hike mean? CHERYL: A trek is a backpacking trip where you don't have to carry your own overnight gear. That might be a hut to hut trip or a supported camping trip. A hike generally conveys day hiking out of hotels or villages. 19:54:59 From Michele Ritala - King County to Everyone: The trips look awesome! 19:55:48 From Jaq | they/them to Everyone: I'd love to see more photography trips! 19:56:27 From Jaq | they/them to Everyone: Tbh tho I came because my mom wants to do the Camino de Santiago for her 60th next year and I have no idea how to begin planning something like that. She asked me to help because I'm a Mountaineer ๐Ÿ˜… CHERYL: I have not done the Camino myself but can chat with you or your mom to suggest a way to start. Email me at cascadehiker12@gmail.com 19:56:30 From Foothills Branch 2 to Everyone: Is information from prior trips shared, so new leaders don't have to start from scratch? CHERYL: Yes, we have been maintaining an archive of trip details for the past few years on our GA Committee page for our leaders to use. 19:58:38 From Karl to Everyone: Do you ever plan trips for families? CHERYL: Families can join adult adventures if everyone is fit and capable to do the itinerary and the leader or one of the parents is a Qualified Youth Leader. Some extra forms have to be filled out. But trips with younger kids would need to be designed differently. We could certainly certify someone through Seattle Youth Committee or Olympia Family Committe to lead family Global Adventures to lead family GAs. 19:59:14 From Bronsa Swint to Everyone: how do you handle language barriers? CHERYL: If you can't expect the local folks to speak enough english to carry out your trip logistics smoothly, then we either learn the language or hire someone locally who speaks the language to outfit and/or guide the trip. 19:59:48 From Karl to Everyone: How many active leaders do you currently have? How many folks on your committee? CHERYL: We have 6 people on our committee currently. Just 3 leaders have trips posted right now, though there are more who have qualified and are discussing the possibility of posting a trip. 20:00:11 From Selena to Everyone: Jac -- FB groups for Camino de Santiago very helpful. 20:03:26 From Karl to Everyone: Do you ever buy a pre-packaged all-inclusive trip and resell it or do you always piece it all together from scratch? CHERYL: We need to provide unique value that someone can't just go out and buy on their own, to justify them paying the leader's expenses and the Mountaineers administration fee. The leader can accomplish that by working with an adventure travel company or local outfitter to customize an existing package trip and add unique elements to it, or by coming up with it from scratch. I do some of both. 20:03:43 From Sylvia Dingwall to Everyone: Bye! I hope I can go on one of these trips one day. Thanks! 20:03:45 From Mark Littrell to Everyone: thanks! 20:04:05 From Lisa to Everyone: Thank you! 20:04:14 From Denise to Everyone: Thank you! CHERYL: The Mountaineers no longer has a cycling activity committee so we aren't able to lead trips that are primarily cycling. 20:16:34 From Amanda Slepski to Everyone: This trip sounds epic 20:18:00 From Linda Shewey to Everyone: I'd love to ski in Finland in 2023! I did some awesome hiking in Finland, too, a few years ago 20:22:08 From cheryl to Everyone: It seems like vetting people is crucial. Have you accepted someone not quite up to it, what do you do? CHERYL: Vetting people is absolutely central to trip success! But we do get some people who aren't quite able to keep up. So we plan our itineraries to have some "give" to take more time and be a little less challenging than we would plan for a very fit group, we keep a close eye on how people are doing along the way, and we develop exit options in advance to keep in our pocket in case someone needs to leave earlly. 20:25:26 From Linda's iPad to Cheryl Talbert(Direct Message): Has Mountaineers surveyed members for destination interest? Particularly domestic for new GA leaders? CHERYL: The survey we put out for this class is the first survey of destination interest we've done recently. 20:27:17 From Linda Shewey to Everyone: do all the leaders have a Garmin InReach? CHERYL: Not all, it's not a requirement because of the cost, but strongly recommended at least by the activity committees that take people to more remote locations. I personally carry an InReach Mini and it has replaced the need to rent a Satellite Phone which is what I did before getting the InReach. Linda Martindell is working with a group of folks to set up an InREach class and build interest in our leaders to get one of these devices. 20:30:42 From Linda's iPad to Everyone: Please share interest if itโ€™s easy to do so 20:30:45 From Linda Shewey to Everyone: Have you led trips to places you haven't been before? CHERYL: This varies by leader. Some leaders nearly always scout new destinations and some do not. But if you haven't been to a particular place before, you need to either be very confident in the information you can find online or hire someone local to help you ensure that your trip can go off smoothly. 20:32:12 From Brandon Harker to Everyone: I have to sign off for the night. Thanks so much for the great info! 20:34:11 From Carlanna Livingstone to Everyone: Great info, thanks! 20:34:22 From Thaddeus Duhme to Everyone: Thank-you !!
